Over time, MCT evolved from a simple community troupe into a full-fledged Cultural Arts Center for the Middle Keys
Infrastructure upgrades have been a major part of MCT’s story:
In 2013, the theater upgraded its cinema component to support digital films and modern sound.
In 2016, the organization successfully paid off the original building mortgage, strengthening its financial foundation
After Hurricane Irma struck in 2017, the theater suffered damage, but volunteers and donors helped repair it and keep it operational.
In 2019, MCT installed a new digital lighting system in its main auditorium, improving production capacity and technical quality.
In 2020, they replaced three commercial HVAC systems, ensuring better comfort and sustainability for the venue
Community Role, Programming, and Mission
MCT is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization; its operations are overseen by a volunteer board of directors, alongside a small paid staff
As of recent seasons, MCT generally produces four major main-stage theatrical productions per year, with a season running from July through June.
Beyond theater, MCT also offers:
Fine art exhibitions in its gallery space
Weekly dance classes for theatre members
Annual holiday events and variety shows
Guest performances and concert
A six-week Summer Theatre Camp for children aged roughly 6 to 18 — underlining a strong educational mission
MCT’s membership is quite diverse: volunteers and performers come from all walks of life — boaters, postal workers, office staff, construction workers, even dolphin trainers.
This inclusive spirit contributes to the theater’s warmth, making it truly a community gathering place where people of all ages and backgrounds contribute to the arts. shutdown123
